A long walk today with the aim of finding jet - which we did at
Saltwick Bay. Nice to see kittiwakes and fulmars on the cliffs too.
We parked up at Whitby Abbey - which deserves a full visit later
this week, and then went down into Whitby via the donkey lane adjacent to the
199 steps, and then out onto the breakwaters...the tide was too far in to
access the beach so back up the steps and along the coastal footpath. We then
scrambled down the cliffs to Saltwick Bay (there was a proper path later on
that we didn't know about) . The wave cut platform was spectacular and yielded
a few ammonites and belemnites. We then began searching for jet which we found
amongst the high tide line. You can test if it is jet by scraping it on
carborundum paper - jet is brown, coal black and quality jewellery grade jet is
ginger.
We then walked on along the coast past the Whitby foghorn and
lighthouse. Then we took the turning for Northcliffe and Seaview Holiday park
(the cafe is seasonal - sadly, this obviously isn't classed as in season)
....reviewed plans for lunch and followed the cinder track to Stainsacre where
we had an excellent light lunch at the Windmill, before walking back via the
Cinder track and Esk Valley trail into Whitby and back up the 199 steps to the
car park.
