Snettersham Knot murmurations

We had chosen this week to come to Norfolk, to coincide with the high tides that wash the Knot off the mudflats and over into a single pool at Snettersham....I have far too many photographs so this blog is the murmurations and  the next will be the Knot landing...

We were at the carpark for 6:45 - which was kindly manned by RSPB volunteers. We walked down the footpath as first light broke - together with a friend from our previous trip to the Cairngorms - he must have recognised my wooly hat to call me from behind. The sunrise was spectacular, together with views of a Barn Owl. Looking across The Wash there was no sign of the sea; plenty of Shelduck and Oystercatchers - and  then you realised  the distant 'grey mud' was infact thousands of Knot. These began to lift on the incoming and very rapid tide. Beautiful shapes created in their murmurations... We didn't get many close flypasts, but the spectacle was spectacular none the less.

Shelduck in the mud as first light broke ..the camera makes it look lighter than it was!

A spectacular sunrise.

Shellduck and Curlew ...

..and then the Knot started to murmerate...

The tide begins to wash the birds off...

Lots of birds...

...and then they streamed past into the pool infront of the Knot hide...
