Fetlar: wildlife and plants

A tour round the southern side of Fetlar stopping at various places including the splendid shop/PO/cafe at Houbie where the treacle and ginger cake with coffee revived us after some dramatic hail squalls.

Lots of Red-throated Divers, Bonxies, a very vocal and flamboyant (if wrens can be flamboyant) Shetland Wren as well as delightful Red-necked Phalaropes. Fairly barren and a typical flora of peatland: Heath Spotted-orchids, Spring Squill, Tormentil, Milkworts and Lousewort. Sparse habitation with a mix of falling down or ruined crofts and prefab homes.

Eider Ducks on the beach.

Eider Ducks.

Incoming 'weather'.

Houbie - where we saw our first very vocal Shetland Wren - it's amazing how different they are to the normal Wren.

Dunlin.

Red-necked Phalarope.

Over 20 Bonxies (Great Skuas) were bathing in the fresh water of Papil Water.

Skuas...
