Shetland Wrens are charismatic little birds and are endemic to the islands. They are slightly larger and darker than our usual Wrens and have louder and more varied calls. This is thought to be an adaptation so that they can be heard on the boulder beaches - one of their favourite habitats where they like to breed. Its bill is stouter and longer, and it has stronger legs, presumably adaptations for the harsh environment. Anyway, this one was very amiable, hopping around at our feet, at Sumburgh lighthouse and enjoying the use of the RSPB's bug house!
