Swansea Submerged Forest

Having returned Tom to Swansea Uni yesterday it's good to see he's been out and about!

Around 6000 years ago, during the Holocene, Wales was covered by a large expanse of deciduous forest. This forest is often revealed on the coast (in particular Borth), due to shifting sands. Over the last year while the main expanse of tree-trunks in peat was covered by sand, a new 'platform' has been revealed with fantastic gnarled tree-trunks, roots and unusual forms.

Swansea Bay towards Mumbles.

The peat 'platform'.

A gnarled and twisted (likely alder) tree-stump.

Cracks in the peat between upright roots and a possible pre-deposition boring.
