Black Necked Grebe on Staines Reservoir.

This morning, Tom returned to Staines Reservoir to see if there were any interesting birds and was once again captivated by the resident black necked grebes.

There were at least 3 on the north basin by the causeway, 2 in the south basin by the causeway and a further 2 further out in the south basin totaling at least 7 individuals. The highlight were the three individuals in the north basin, as unusually they congregated together allowing for some fantastic views and photography opportunities.

Strange conditions: while the reservoir was like a millpond, it was warm, overcast and had a distinct haze- which meant that the midges were out in force!

The grebes were joined on the water by tufted duck, shoveler, teal, mallard, gadwall as well as little grebe and great crested grebe.

Grebes doing what grebes do- diving, defecating and having a good scratch.

The typical progression from 3 to 2 to 1 grebes as each dived.
