The Hartsop Horseshoe

What a great walk this is! We parked up in the car park at Hartsop and then took the direct route up Hartsop Dodd. It was steep, no understatement, but soon gets you onto the tops. From Hartsop Dodd you stroll across to Caudale Moor  -Wainwright regards the whole summit plateau as Caudale Moor, so the summit for Wainwright baggers is the highest point - which is Stonycove Pike. Then it is a scramble down to Threshthwaite Mouth before ascending onto Thornthwaite Crag. From here there are stunning views down to Lake Windermere and across to Central Lakes. The ridge that continues to Gray Crag is delightfully gentle before a not too steep descent into the valley and Hayeswater Gill (apart from the last short stretch which was steep!).

Back down by Hayeswater Gill - a rather nice traditional barn.
