A couple of oils...

At the moment I'm taking a break from leading workshops and being at Crafts of the North. This is so that I can travel more and also focus on doing what I want to do as far as artwork is concerned, rather than worrying about what sells. This first oil painting though was a pleasure to do as a commission, as I like snow, found it challenging to paint and I know the place well...

Skiddaw from Powter Howe.

And the painting below, was the first one I have done just for me, for many years - literally! It's from our visit to Shetland and the wild, wet and windy day at Hermaness on Unst, crawling to the cliff edge to watch the Gannets and admire their flying skills, before the next squall arrived!

Norfolk oil

A wet morning gave me the opportunity to paint. It's been a while since I did an oil for myself and I enjoyed this one. It's called 'Waiting', as we were waiting for the tide to come in acrosss The Wash at Snettersham to lift the Knot off the far mudflats to fly over us. Click here for the actual day The light wasn't brilliant to photograph the painting, but hey ho. I've included some photos of progress below too...

My 'studio' aka the kitchen.

A quick sketch for layout.

Beginning to get colour on...

Building the sky...

Introducing hte horizon.

Adding the mud ...

And the foreground scrubby vegetation.

Mae's Tearooms, Uldale

It's always good to have a restock: so some general pictures and then photographs of the individual paintings. I have also placed three pieces of fused glass there - they really stand out on the windowsills, so if you are local I invite you to visit and enjoy a brew and cake and my contributions to the gallery! Feel free to contact them on 016973 71369 or email: info @maestearooms.co.uk

New Painting

A while back, we had a great day out on Harter Fell and Hard Knott. Click here for the walk. Today's painting has been waiting in the wings for a while as I have been out and about and/or gardening (beating the fruit garden into some kind of submission). So here goes - photos of how it progressed - there may be an odd tweak, but basically I think it's finished. A large oil - painted with a palette knife - 50cm x 75cm.

The panorama across Eskdale to Scafell, Esk Pike and Bowfell.

Off to new homes...

It's always nice when you a painting goes to a new home! These three flew off the shelf last week and that means I can paint more! At this time of year though, being outside has to be priority...Spring has spung in and goes so quickly and there's so much to see!
