Lamonby verges

After we had been to Eycott, back home via Lamonby verges (and the Old Crown pub at Hesket Newmarket).

The verges with Quaking Grass, Red Clover, Twayblade, Yellow Rattle, Common Spotted-orchid and various Hawkbits obvious in the picture above.

Unusually, this is my first trip to these verges - actually I tell a lie - when we went a month ago an indigo sky deposited cold, wet hail on us, so we retreated! This time it was cool with a stiff breeze, but the Bird's-eye Primrose was superb, as were the Globe Flowers!  

In the distance a clump of Globe Flowers illuminated beautifully by the light...

Sadly, by the time I got there, the sun went in!

Lamonby Verges: Cowslips and Early-purple Orchids

Everything is happening floristically from now on, so it was  case of a quick detour to Lamonby on the way home from workon Wednesday.  A fabulous spectacle of cowslips and Early-purple Orchids, but most joy came from the single Bird's-eye Primrose that was out!

After visiting Eycott we walked along the verge at Lamonby....

Bird's-eye Primrose ...on its last legs ...

A white ragged robin.

 The year's first visit didn't disappoint!

The orchids - mainly twayblade (going to seed) and northern marsh x fragrant orchids were spectacular.

In this heat we didn't want to travel far, or walk far, so a trip to Lamonby seemed a good option. It's frightening how quickly the flowers and season are going over. The orchids, especially the marsh fragrants were spectacular, but they deserve a post of their own.
