 There were some fabulous sheep, cattle and horses at this year's show...so here are the sheep....I just love Herdies and Swaledales! 

Hesket Newmarket Show: Horticulure and Baking ...and the Friar Cup.

In order to gain the Friar Hall Cup for the most pints in the Industrial Tent you really have to enter all the categories and  then hope to pick up a few points. While my tomatoes were the best I have ever grown - so were everyone elses, so no points there....and I forgot to photograph my third prize quiche. 

A vase of annuals - I grew many sunflowers - they were just too big and I'd have needed a step ladder to reach them - so pleased that three small ones were placed.

Six sweet peas - the first time I have had any decent blooms to enter.

Hesket Newmarket Show : Floral Art

 I was delighted to be awarded the most points in this category - given I didn't do anything before three O'Clock the day before....In many ways these are the entries I most enjoy making. 

My table arrangement for a  harvest supper.

The Glory of the Garden in a basket - thanks ot my Mother in Law's garden as ours really has no glory in terms of flowers apart from giant sunflowers, nasturtiums and sweet peas.

Hesket Show 2023 : Handicrafts

 An absolutely classic weekend and show! ..and the culmination of weeks of work and planning. I'm dividing the blogs into the sections of classes in the show - so we begin with the Handicrafts ...and my entries  ...

I don't do traditional beadwork - but enjoyed creating the felt pomegranite - with some hand embroidery on the back for the skin ....the beads were sewn on with difficulty with invisible thread! 

A mixture of hand - dyed fabrics, paint and machine embroidery. 

For a felt item - a box of labelled pebble specimens. 

A scarf using up the old hanks of spun wool from previous show entries - no placing for this year's hank of wool. 

A patchwork of cyanotype dyed fabric using plants from our lane that was then quilted. 

...and finally a greetings card inspired by poppies. 

Cuttlefish hatching!

In mid July we found a cluster of cuttlefish eggs stranded on the shore at Mawbray. Click here for that blog. We rushed them off to Maryport Aquarium, where they kindly put them in a tank to hopefully rear them ...today we went back to see the tiny little hatched cuttles - they are now about the size of a small little-finger nail....and very cute!
