Cemaes coast - stromatolites

Part of the reason for the previous walk along the coast from Cemaes click here, was to search for stromatolites. If you are wondering what these are click here  and click here. We were successful in our hunt ...this time they were oncolitic structures; oncoliths being rolled algal fragments.

Stromatolites!

Stromatolites with hammer for scale.

Possible stromatilic limestone.

Just along the coast from Cemaes were these circular 'ponds' - 60 million years ago water eroded the limestone and then it was filled with sand 5 million years ago - which is now eroding out to reveal the 'pipe'.

These pits were where jasper was dug out.
