Parys Mountain, Anglesey

While on holiday last week we visited Paris Mountain - what a stunning place! The site was mined extensively for copper in the late 18th century and at one time produced more copper than any other mine in the world. Today an alien landscape remains; the colour of the ground reflecting the minerals within. It's very reminiscent of the geothermal areas in Iceland and equally spectacular. Mining activity took place right back in the bronze age and there is also evidence of Roman mining. Interestingly, once the major opencast mining had been undertaken Cornish expertise was brought in create the underground network of shafts and tunnels. The possibility of opening the site again still remains a significant option.
