In the dunes, behind the beach opposite Swansea University (Singleton Campus), Tom found some stalked puffballs - these were likely to be the uncommon Winter Stalkball (Tulostoma brumale). However, they could be the far rarer Scaly Stalkball (Tulostoma melanocyclum). The Scaly Stalkball has only been found at 2 sites at Merthyr Mawr in Glamorgan.
They are going to be identified soon by looking at the spores. The group of fungi were around 150 in number and were limited to a single large patch of moss in the dunes.
