High Pike lichens

After car starting issues,  a most wonderfuk walk....and the car started when we got back too! Yeh! A cold and windy day. Sadly Rocky couldn't join us as his 'Old Dog's Vertigo' hadn't cleared sufficiently. However the lichens, minerals and club mosses made up for the days troubles - so much so that there will be another following blog.

Walking up High Pike, I bagan to photograph lichens - maybe I should make it my New Year's resolution to tackle lichen id!

I can at least recognise Rhizocarpon geographicum

Looking across to Carrock Fell.

And along the flank of High Pike towards Bowscale, Bannerdale and Blencathra.

It was absolutely Baltic on the top!

The white wiggly bits are Thomnolia vermicualris, otherwise known as the White Worm Lichen.

This, surprisingly, is a thriving population.

A lattice of lichen threads its way through the grass.

It is one of my favourites!
