Beinn Bheigher, Islay

Tom and Steve enjoyed a trip up Beinn Bheigher, Islay's highest peak, in glorious weather.

Pale butterwort on the side of the track.

Round leaved sundew and bog pimpernel.
Beinn Bheigher summit and trig point - looking north.
Some fantastic alpine/ higher altitude flora: juniper, scottish bilberry, fir clubmoss (in incredible abundance this year) and mountain everlasting.

Golden ringed dragonflies mating, green tiger beetle and a late stage instar emperor moth caterpillar- there were large numbers of caterpillars on the heather flanks of the mountain.
Dark green fritillary, small pearl bordered fritillary, true lover's knot moth and painted lady. The small pearl bordered fritillary is not common on the island with only 3 or 4 records. This individual was at the same site we found it last year, suggesting a permanent colony.
