Broomrape species at Maryport

A quick trip after work and a glorious walk! The ballast and coal waste dump next to the sea wall has changed so much since our last visit. The ladies bedstraw was spectacular - the bee orchids are well gone and we didn't see any common blues - which I would have expected too. The pyramidal orchids are just beginning to go over and the yellow rattle is rattling. Both the purple and common broomrapes are over, but there were a few hanging on. There were lots of small skippers and many, many burnet moths.

General views.

Pyramidal orchid and ladies bedstraw and red clover.

Purple broomrape with host plant yarrow.

Common broomrape: the different stigma -  reddish for common broomrape and white for purple broomrape; purple broomrape.

Burnet moths.

Everlasting pea.

Small skippers

Sea holly and sea carrot.

Female and male stonechats; starling and goldfinch.
