Jet hunting at Saltwick Bay

A quick visit on today's walk, click here for the walk, to see if we could find more jet....and yes we did. Characteristically we found bits in amongst the seaweed on the high tide line - washed into the weed filled pools. We then walked into Whitby where we visited The Ebor Jetworks to purchase a jet ring. This small establishment collects the jet locally, unlike some others,  polishes it and makes its jewellery on site. They are also undertaking current research into jet and Sarah Steele is carrying out her doctorate aiming to fully characterise Whitby jet. It was interesting to know that Whitby jet isn't fossilised monkey puzzle and that this is a myth - it has been identified as being six species of Jurassic tree to date.

Our finds - before we did scratch tests ....and there wasn't too much coal in this lot....from Saltwick Bay.

Large pieces of jet - in the Ebor jetworks.

Ebor jet works.

My ring and a couple of pieces of our own jet.
