Aldeburgh was an unimportant little fishing village until some time after 1500, when a shifting coastline opened up a sheltered 'haven' which soon became a thriving centre for ship building and trade. The town prospered, but declined as the river Alde silted up so that large vessels could no longer berth. It then survived as a fishing village until the 19th century, when it became a fashionable seaside resort. Boats still fish and sell their catch from huts on the shingle beach. (www.aldeburghtowncouncil.gov/history) ...and that was the reason for our visit - to see the fishing boats that are hauled up onto the beach and have a nosey in the fish shacks ....and the oysers we had for tea were lovely!
