After our visit to Aldburgh we went to Blaxhall Common with the idea of walking to Iken Church which has an Anglo Saxon carved stone in it. Situated on a tranquil estuary it is still a site of pilgrimage.
www.britainexpress.com/attractions states ' Sometime in the mid 7th century, a Christian monk by the name of Botwulf requested a grant of land ....a waste and ownerless place ...known to locals as St Botolph he built his moastery. A Christian community grew up....he died around 680 AD and was buried at Iken. After Viking raids a new church was built on the site.... In 1977 the Anglo-Saxon cross was discovered which may have marked St Boltophs's grave.'
We had underestimated the distance ot the church - given the heat, so a couple of stops on the way as we ended up driving to the church.
