Wetheral - St Constantine's caves.

While in Wetheral looking for the Yellow star of Bethlehem click here we walked along the river bank to St Constantine's cells (Wetheral caves). There is no evidence that Constantine ever lived there and he has been described as a 6th century prince and a 10th century king.  The caves were more likely to have been used by monks from the local priory, as early as the 14th century, as a refuge during the border troubles. They were also thought to have been used by monks to store grain in during times of grain shortage. After returning we walked up to the priory gatehouse - all that remains of the priory, which was well worth the visit.... Click here...
