Sketch the Wall

A gloriously sunny day yesterday and by chance I had a meeting outside on the Roman Wall. I always forget that it is only 50 minutes from here - note to self: must visit more! I have been invited to help with a project called 'Sketch the Wall'. Basically it will provide an opportunity for visitors to sketch the wall and contribute to a larger collaborative piece of work that will capture the very essence of the wall.

So yesterday was all about finding venues and inspiration. The event is going to be held at Walltown Crags and the Turrret 45a provides a perfect venue with classic panoramic views and realtively easy access. I'll blog again when details are finalised, but the date is now set at May 4th.

The Whin Sill is clearly seen at Walltown where the wall is built along the top of it, giving the Romans a prominent and easily defendable site. The Whin sill is a sill - so a sheet of lava that was intruded and is made of dolerite. (https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/GeositesHadrian) Dolerite is hard and the Whin sill is still quarried for roadstone. Click here for an excellent leaflet about the Whin Sill.

It was nice to see some signs of spring!

The hawthorns were covered in lichens.

I love the blocky nature of the Whin Sill ...plenty of potential for design work!

Fter scrambling up onto the top of the sill, The Wall came into site.

A microscopic world

On Wednesday we held a workshop titled 'Wordsworth's Microscopic World'. Run on behalf of the Wordsworth Trust (Grasmere), Tom was the brains behind the day. One of the highlights was the projection of images, of found items from the morning's walk, from down the microscope at a large scale on the wall. Below are some of those fascinating images. These were then interpreted, by participants, in different black and white media in small blocks that would make a Victorian-style microscope slide...of which more at a later date!

A Celebration of the Seashore

This was a whole day workshop, in a similar style to last year's Celebration of Seedheads day. I provided lots and lots of inspiration - emptying many, many shells and other seashore finds into the car and then into the village hall. After a PowerPoint giving different examples of artwork inspired by the seahore, participants were able to use a variety of resources and materials to create their work ....and there was some lovely work produced!

Allonby between the storms

In a brief respite between the two storms a trip to the beach. Storm Dudley and t he high tide hadn't been as destructive as I thought they might have been. The light on the beach was great!
