A gloriously sunny day yesterday and by chance I had a meeting outside on the Roman Wall. I always forget that it is only 50 minutes from here - note to self: must visit more! I have been invited to help with a project called 'Sketch the Wall'. Basically it will provide an opportunity for visitors to sketch the wall and contribute to a larger collaborative piece of work that will capture the very essence of the wall.
So yesterday was all about finding venues and inspiration. The event is going to be held at Walltown Crags and the Turrret 45a provides a perfect venue with classic panoramic views and realtively easy access. I'll blog again when details are finalised, but the date is now set at May 4th.
The Whin Sill is clearly seen at Walltown where the wall is built along the top of it, giving the Romans a prominent and easily defendable site. The Whin sill is a sill - so a sheet of lava that was intruded and is made of dolerite. (https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/GeositesHadrian) Dolerite is hard and the Whin sill is still quarried for roadstone.
