Jan Mayen lies in the middle of nowhere: 550km north of Iceland and 450km east of Greenland. With no permanent population, (just a few Norwegian meteorologists and military) it is described as 'bleak and barren' - it was! It's main feature -the Beerenberg volcano, is the world's most northerly active volcano, but views of the spectacular snow and glacier covered cone eluded us.
Despite poor visibility and a decent swell the landing site was actually relatively calm, so the zodiacs were able to land ...we were though, called off the island early due to worsening conditions. It was damp, eerie and spectacular.
Jan Mayen creates its own weather...most of the year it is encompassed by mist. |
We arrived by zodaic through a fulmar welcoming committee. |
The beach... |
Volcanic sands and Russian lumbar. |
Fulmars. |
Volcanic deposits. |

The beach - due to visability we weren't allowed to go much further. |
