Marwick Head RSPB reserve

After pitching the tent at Eviedale campsite we went to Marwick Head RSPB reserve on the west coast. The cliffs were spectacular and the seabirds in profusion. A lovely cacophony with kittiwakes, fulmars and puffins.

The monument is the Kitchener monument.. This memorial was erected in 1926 by the people of Orkney to commemorate much-loved Minister of War Lord Kitchener and the crew of HMS Hampshire who lost their lives when the ship hit a mine in 1916 around 2.5km offshore from this point.  Suprisingly I found a possbible family link - Gomm being my maiden name.
