Coniston Old Man via the slate mines.

We were going to do the whole Coniston round including Swirl How and Wetherlam, but as we drove down from north lakes it was clear that the cloud was down. We parked in Coniston and took what seems to be called the tourist route up the Old Man. To be fair it was a really nice path and certainly didn't seem to be very steep either - although maybe I'm just getting fitter! The weather though didn't improve and visibility cut out at the slate mines and became a thick mizzle by the summit. We decided that we'd call it a day as the views were non existent. It was fairly alarming how many people were out and about though without the proper clothing or a map! We were asked how far it was to the top all the way down ...even below Low Water and almost to where the Walna Scar footpath comes in. The slate mines were spectacular and it was nice to see the tracks, ropeways and a clog-winch left in situ.
