July moth trap (2)

It's not often we put the moth trap out on two successive nights, but with rain forecast for a few days time we took advantage of the current hot and dry spell. It was amazing how different the results were, with some typical 'July' moths making their first appearances. Results are from July 2nd. 

We had 45 species with the top ten most abundant being: common wainscot 16; white ermine 14; barred straw 11; middle barred minor 11; buff ermin 9; flame 9; green carpet 8: beautiful golden Y 5; clouded bordered brindle 5 and snout 5. 

Plenty of spectacular looking moths including large elephant hawk; garden tiger; poplar hawk; coronet; burnished brass and brimstone.
