The Howk, Caldbeck

Earlier in the month, we went up the Howk. There was plenty of water in the river, so the waterfalls were spectacular - not as spectacular though as the cave spiders we found in a fissure. The cave spider (Meta Menardi) is rare (not recorded - probably under recorded) in the Northern Fells, so it was 'lovely' to see....if not rather reminiscent of Shelob - it moved a little too rapidly for comfort!

Signs of Spring.

Froth platelets.

The female cave spider lays a cluster of eggs and weaves a cocoon around them.
