Lewes Downs (Mount Caburn) NNR

Tom has managed a cracking day out - although I love the north I have to admit being envious of the southern flora!

From Tom: Just scraped in the nice weather I went walking from Glynde to Lewes across Lewes Downs (Mount) Caburn NNR in search of burnt-tip orchid. The site supports one of the largest colonies of burnt-tip orchid in Britain- a true spectacle.

Looking down Caburn Bottom (right).

Plenty on the wing: holly blue, dingy skipper, small heath. Also seen were common blue, red admiral, peacock and painted lady.

Caburn Bottom.

Orchids: burnt-tip (early var.) in flower and in bud and fragrant orchid sp. in rosette (right).

Milkwort colour variations.

A trio of burnt-tip orchids with salad burnet.

Lewes.
