Butterflies at Denbies Hillside

As well as a spectacular show of orchids at Denbies Hillside, Surrey Hills, there were plenty of butterflies on the wing. The site is well known for adonis and chalkhill blues, although I may have been a bit early for them. Alas, the site provided a good show of species.

Denbies Hillside.

A selection of blues.

Large skipper, lace border (a nationally scarce A and declining species of moth of chalk grassland), green hair-streak and speckled wood.

Grizzled skipper- a new species for me.

A large hornet-mimic hoverfly and a five-spot burnet.

A white-legged damselfly (new to me) and a male beautiful demoiselle.
