Military orchids at Homefield Wood NR

The main attraction to Homefield Wood NR are the military orchids. Military orchids are one of Britain's rarest and most impressive orchids and are only found at three sites, two of which are in the Chiltons and another in Suffolk. Once common in the Chilterns, there is genetic evidence of cross breeding within the monkey orchids of Hartslock, suggesting that the monkey, lady and military orchids were once far more widespread with frequent hybridisation.

The majority of the military orchids were caged or fenced off with some left out of cages. The site, however seems to be coping well with the footfall, or at least far better than Hartslock.
