Clints Quarry, Egremont

This is really a hidden gem of a reserve - despite appearances as you enter. The entrance is damp, dark and unappealing but once inside the quarry the flora is spectacular. We had hoped to find bee orchids, but either they haven't flowered this year, or they are over, or more likely we just missed  them! The number of twayblade was astounding and there were lots of common spotted orchids. The northern marsh were over, but there were plenty of vigorous hybrids. The ox-eye daisies, as always, were pretty.

Common twayblade.

Common spotted x northern marsh (Dactylorhiza x venusta) with hybrid vigour.

Speckled wood - there were ringlet and meadow brown too.

Male broad-bodied chaser.
